A prohibited transaction is a dealing involving retirement plan assets that federal law forbids unless an exemption applies, typically because of a conflict.
Most advisors encounter this through rollover recommendations, where the exemption relied upon carries conditions including impartial conduct standards, disclosure, written policies and documented rationale.
