Custody

Custody, in the regulatory sense, means holding client funds or securities or having the authority to obtain possession of them.

It is broader than most advisers assume — certain fee-deduction arrangements, standing letters of authorisation and access credentials can constitute custody, triggering surprise examination requirements.
