Sequence of returns risk

Sequence risk is the danger that poor returns early in a withdrawal period permanently damage a portfolio, even if long-run average returns are acceptable.

Two retirees with identical average returns and identical spending can end in completely different places depending on the order those returns arrived. It is the single most important risk in the first years of drawdown.
