Separately managed account (SMA)

A separately managed account is a portfolio managed to a specific strategy where the client directly owns the underlying securities rather than fund shares.

Direct ownership is what makes tax management and restrictions possible at the security level, which is the main reason to prefer one over a fund running the same strategy.
