Registration type is the legal form an account is opened under — individual, joint, trust, individual retirement account, corporate — determining tax treatment, ownership and beneficiary rules.
An allocation decision made at the household has to respect what each registration beneath it permits. Some holdings are inappropriate in a retirement account for tax reasons and unavailable in a trust for legal ones.
