A realized gain or loss is the difference between sale proceeds and cost basis, recognized at the moment a position is sold, as opposed to an unrealized gain.
Clients feel realized gains at tax time and unrealized gains on their statement, which is why a portfolio decision that looks small on the statement can feel large in April.
