Expense ratio

An expense ratio is the annual cost of a fund or strategy, expressed as a percentage of assets and deducted from returns rather than billed to the client.

Because it is netted out rather than invoiced, clients rarely perceive it as something they pay — which is exactly why it belongs in any honest statement of total cost.
